NotebookLM alternative

A NotebookLM alternative for doing the work. Not just for understanding the sources.

Start with the honest part: NotebookLM is free, it is very good, and if you are a student in one of the countries where Google is giving away a year of the paid tier, no comparison page should talk you out of it. CarrelAI is the alternative worth considering for a different job — not summarising a set of sources, but working inside one document over weeks, with a canvas, annotations, notes and a planner around it.

Two different shapes of tool

NotebookLM is organised around a notebook: a collection of sources you ask questions across, with generated overviews, mind maps and study aids produced from the set. It is built for the moment you have twenty things to read and need to understand the shape of them.

CarrelAI is organised around a document. The file is open, rendered, at the page you left it on, and the tools are arranged around it — a canvas on one side, notes and annotations on the page, tasks filed against it, and a chat that has read it. It is built for the weeks after that first understanding, when you are working through the material rather than surveying it.

What is here that a notebook does not have

The difference is almost entirely in what you can do to the document rather than what you can ask about it.

  • A full drawing canvas per document, open beside the page and saving as you go
  • Highlights anchored to the words on the page, surviving zoom and screen changes
  • Rich-text sticky notes in your own colours, grouped by the day you wrote them
  • Tasks with due dates, priorities and a timer, carrying the document's name
  • One planner across everything, and one search over documents, notes and tasks
  • A folder tree by term, module or week

Where NotebookLM is the better tool, plainly

It is free, and its free tier is more generous than this product's — as of September 2026 that is 100 notebooks, 50 sources each and 50 chat queries a day, against 25 starting credits here. If cost is the deciding factor, that is the end of the comparison.

Its generated artefacts have no equivalent here either. Audio and video overviews, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes are genuinely useful study output and this product makes none of them. And US students have been able to claim twelve months of the paid tier free, which is an offer worth checking before paying for anything.

The case for CarrelAI is narrower and should be stated as such: you want to draw, mark up and plan around a document, in the same place you ask questions about it. If you do not, use NotebookLM.

Where this one is different in kind

Two things are worth naming beyond the workspace. The chat searches your own uploaded passages before every answer with no mode that answers from the model's memory, and on Pro each citation is a link that opens the document at that passage rather than a reference you have to go and find.

And three providers sit behind it — GPT-5, Claude and Gemini — with automatic failover if one is unavailable mid-request, and the choice of which answers on the Pro plan. A tool tied to a single model family is tied to that family's outages and its judgement.

Side by side, against notebooklm.

Three rows in that table go the other way, and they are not minor ones. NotebookLM is free and produces study material this product does not attempt. Pick on which column's rows you will actually use.

Questions people ask before they sign up.

Why pay for this when NotebookLM is free?

For most people surveying a set of sources, you should not — NotebookLM's free tier is more generous and produces study artefacts this product does not make. The case for paying here is the workspace around the document: a drawing canvas, in-page annotations, notes and a task planner, in the same place as the chat.

Does it make audio overviews or flashcards?

No. There are no audio or video overviews, no flashcards, no quizzes and no mind maps. The output here is the answer, the annotation, the drawing and the task rather than generated study material.

Can I use both?

That is a reasonable setup and a common one — a notebook for the initial survey of a reading list, and a document workspace for the few sources you will actually be living inside. Nothing here needs exclusivity.

Upload one file and see whether it read it properly.

That is the only question worth answering before paying for anything, and the free plan exists to answer it. No card.
